Engaging in the spiritual practice of nonviolent civil disobedience

Nonviolent civil disobedience is perhaps the most powerful and effective means of bringing about positive social change. In the spirit of Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus and the Prophets of Old, literally hundreds of the religious leaders and members of Religious Witness have engaged in this spiritual practice.

Annually remembering and honoring those who have died homeless in our City

Neglect at all levels of government to prioritize the needs of poor people in budget allocations has contributed significantly to the number of individuals dying homeless in San Francisco each year. Extreme poverty forces individuals to endure long nights on the dangerous streets, exposed to illness, cold, terrifying loneliness and, all too often, early death. Over the last 18 years, at least 2,000 individuals have died homeless in San Francisco.

So that these sisters and brothers will not pass from our midst unnamed and unmourned, Religious Witness annually calls the community together for a dramatic and reverent memorial service.

1999 Memorial Service in Civic Center Plaza

Religious Witness holds a special Veterans Memorial Service at the National Cemetery in the Presidio,
remembering and honoring those veterans who died homeless in San Francisco and throughout our nation.
Ron Kovak, veteran of the Vietnam War and famed author of Born on the Fourth of July,
laid our wreath on the cemetery monument.
